Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man
who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stand on the path of sinners,
    nor sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the LORD’s[a] law.
On his law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water,
that produces its fruit in its season,
whose leaf also does not wither.
    Whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked shall perish.

Summary

Psalm 1 is a short chapter in the Book of Psalms that contrasts the way of the righteous with the way of the wicked. It describes the blessings and prosperity that come from living a godly life in accordance with God’s law, compared to the ultimate downfall of those who live in wickedness.

  1. The Blessed Man:
    • Does not follow the advice of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of mockers.
    • Delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night.
    • Is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season, with leaves that do not wither; whatever he does prospers.
  2. The Wicked:
    • Are not so; they are like chaff that the wind blows away.
    • Will not stand in the judgment, nor in the assembly of the righteous.
  3. Conclusion:
    • The Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

In essence, Psalm 1 emphasizes the importance of following God’s guidance and the stark difference in outcomes between those who pursue righteousness and those who engage in wickedness.
